“Last call” snow totals and forecast summary

Everything still looks on track for a major winter storm here in the Mid-Atlantic, with severe ice down in North Carolina and far southern Virginia and big snow accumulations in our neck of the woods around Richmond up to Fredricksburg. Below is the storm total accumulations map from the National Weather Service office in Wakefield; note the swath of 8-10” that includes part of Chesterfield, and encompasses Richmond, Henrico, Hanover, Powhatan, and Goochland. Even south of town where sleet may mix in, they still have Petersburg/Colonial Heights/Hopewell, Dinwiddie and Prince George getting 6-8”. I agree with these numbers as they reflect a persistent consensus among the majority of the forecast models. To reiterate, snow should arrive in our area between 3 and 5pm this evening, becoming heavy overnight and tapering off early tomorrow morning.

As this storm gets underway, you can help the Weather Service refine and improve future forecasts by downloading the mPING app for iPhone and Android; mPING lets you report what type of precip is falling in your area and sends that info to the Weather Service, who uses it to “fill in” what the radar can’t see or differentiate. The mPING website (and the app) has a map where you can graphically see what types of precip are being reported in different areas.
