A quick word (or two, or three) about Hurricane Matthew:
- Matthew is currently a category 4 hurricane south of Haiti/Dominican Republic, with sustained winds of 140 mph and moving slowly west at 9 mph.
- There is very good model agreement that Matthew will soon take a sharp right turn, and begin moving almost due north on a path that will take it across the Dominican Republic and into the Bahamas by Wednesday of next week.
- From there, considerable uncertainty still remains with the forecast track, as it depends on the strength and path of several other weather features entering the eastern U.S. at that time. But one scenario has Matthew hugging the coast of the Carolinas and Virginia before moving on to New England. A direct impact from Matthew on Virginia appears unlikely as of this writing, but the scenario just mentioned would bring gusty winds and moderate to heavy rain by next weekend. Again, that’s just one scenario of many at this point.
- Key point is, everyone along the east coast will want to keep up to date on Hurricane Matthew as the forecast continues to unfold.
