Moderate snow event likely Thursday morning

The situation regarding Wednesday night/Thursday morning has changed a bit over the last 24 hours. This is now looking like a low-end moderate event, even for Richmond. However, there will be a sharp cut-off to snow amounts, the further north and west of Richmond you go. The short range models that excel with these type of systems have continued to push more moisture and heavier precip rates towards us over the last few day. Richmond is right on the edge, with areas east of 95 and south of 64 likely to see the heavier amounts, and amounts really go up southeast of Petersburg down towards Emporia over to Norfolk.
Timing: snow should begin around 11pm Wednesday night (or shortly thereafter) and become heavy during the very early morning hours, and taper off after 7am Thursday.

Amounts: see graphic below; this is the forecast from the National Weather Service and I agree with it wholeheartedly. It shows metro Richmond (but also including Chesterfield, Powhatan, and Amelia) with about 2 to 3 inches, areas northwest of the city seeing 1 to 2 (Hanover, Goochland, western Henrico, Louisa, Caroline); and then amounts start reaching 4-6" as you head south towards the state line and east towards Norfolk.

Impacts: with temperatures mostly below freezing during this event, snow will accumulate both on grass and on roads, leading to a hazardous commute Thursday morning
