The National Hurricane Center has just issued its 5pm advisory for Hurricane Joaquin, and they have shifted their track significantly to the west, in line with what many models have been pointing to for several days: land fall over coastal North Carolina, near or over the Outer Banks.
We’re now looking at a serious situation for much of our region. Heavy rain will have already moved through on Friday, and so the ground will already be saturated. Winds will increase Saturday into Sunday, with sustained winds peaking at 50 to 60 mph and gusts between 70 and 90 mph when the storm makes land fall early Sunday afternoon, so it won’t take much for trees to start coming down. Widespread power outages are likely, and flooding will be a problem in just about every corner of the state.
